General, Health, Life

She made my day.

My hope when I stopped wearing hats and wigs was that strangers would ignore me, or if they were to notice me, at least tolerate me. But this afternoon, on a quick trip to the HEB to get a few things for the weekend, a sweet cashier complimented me on my hair. “The way you have your hair really makes your eyes stand out. I see you’re eating healthily,” she said, scanning lean chicken, organic milk, and vegetables, “but you just look so vibrant.” I almost cried. Needless to say that on the way home, when “Break Stuff” played from my homemade CD, I just laughed because today no part of me should identify with the lyrics.

I’ve said it a hundred times, and I’ll say it again: the body is amazingly resilient. To think that six months ago I was put to sleep, my abdomen cut wide open, my body inundated for nine weeks with chemicals that require anything that touches them to be disposed of in a biohazard container, and now I can do everything I could do before (except donate blood or organs, of course – so don’t ask ;)). That is some seriously impressive design.

So far on this blog I probably seem like the most insufferably self-consumed person ever. Realistically I may be in the top five, and this is blakery.com. But don’t worry – I’ll find something to write about besides myself. It’s just that my answer to “What do you do?” is, happily, “In event of what?”. It seems better than “Nothing really… I take care of the house, cook, play with the pets, work out…”, since most people who are employed outside the home also have to find time for those things. Anyway, my world right now is largely me and the people I love. I am going to start looking for a job after the holidays (any ideas?), and now that I have the energy, I should volunteer.

As for things that will happen more immediately, our friend from school (elementary through college) is coming to visit tomorrow – it should be fun! We’re also helping a friend move; then we’re going to a party with Joel’s coworkers. A busy weekend, especially when compared to our usual fatting around. Mmmm… fatting around. 🙂
