Um, what?

02.18.05 | Comment?

Today I was out and about, as sometimes I am, just to get a few things. At a restaurant supply store, where I could easily spend days, the cashier and I were chit-chatting while the receipts printed. He was a nice-enough guy, probably in his forties, and I think he co-owned the place. Business or personal use for these items, what do you do for a living, that sort of thing. And then: “Are your children grown?”

Blink.

“I… don’t have any children.”

I’m used to “What high school do you attend?” (at a wedding last summer for my parents’ friends’ daughter), “May I see some ID?” (at R-rated movies), “You’re both over eighteen, right?” (when checking into hotels with my husband), and looks of shock and disbelief when I mention that I’m married or graduated college over a year ago.

So no, sir. My kids are not grown. I haven’t even started that chapter of my life yet. But thanks, and I think I’ll go back to shopping in the juniors’ section.
