Today in food

I like spicy food. Not the crazy hot stuff where you can’t feel your legs – there’s no point to that, in my opinion – but a good hot. Maybe it’s because I climbed on the table and ate a jalapeño when I was two years old (though I’m told it was an unpleasant experience), or because things tend to be a little bland without some spice. Anyway. We have been frequenting the Wing Stop restaurants in our area after we found that they meet a very important criterion – they do not use trans fat for frying. (Surprisingly, the Dixie Chicken in College Station uses peanut oil, though some of the things fried there may have been pre-fried in trans fat.) I never imagined this former vegetarian would one day eat chicken wings almost weekly. I avoid the skin, but still – I’ve come a long way.

I eased into chicken wing eating with Joel’s favorite – Lemon Pepper – and ventured into the Cajun and Original Hot flavors, all of which were delightful. But tonight I wanted to try the Atomic. Incredulous stares from the staff. “Have you had them before?” No, but I ate the other spicy ones and was fine. “Well, you better try one just to be sure.” I tried it. Three workers watch intently, expecting something – I don’t know what – perhaps for steam to blow from my ears and my head to pop off my neck.

Tasty. Let’s go with it. Do they perform this test with everyone who orders Atomic? Good lookin’ out, though. I really do appreciate it. Now, it should be said that my mouth did catch fire and my lips are hooker red. But yum.

Also yum was my breakfast – Joel made his signature puffed oven pancake while I was still in bed. Now that I’ve told the tale of two meals, I had lil’ turkey sammiches for lunch. We did yard work, played video games, and went to the driving range. That was my Saturday. Back to you.
