Downtown

For a girl who could successfully maneuver through downtown Dallas at age sixteen (after a few obligatory attempts to go the wrong way on one way streets – one doesn’t do that more than thrice), I am woefully inept driving in downtown San Antonio.

Joel has had jury duty for the past two weeks (!), with only a slim chance of ending tomorrow. We quickly discovered that parking fees would add up; since I’m not doing anything and it’s not that far, I have been shuttling him to and fro every day. I forgave myself for getting lost the first couple of times. But please. Today is the seventh day I have driven there and back, and the fifth time I have been completely unsure which way is home. I am intensely directionally challenged, so I’m used to this, but when I’m downtown I can’t pull off and say, “Alright… it’s nine a.m. and the sun is there, so I wanna go…” And because of the one way street situation, I can’t just reverse the way I went. Blast. The good news is that I do eventually get home, but I hate wasting time and gas. I have adopted the strategy that when things get REALLY bad, I figure out what my intuition is, then do exactly the opposite – never fails.

In other news, someone finally called me back about volunteering, and I’m excited about that. And, if everything goes as planned, I will be starting some classes in the fall. My goal is to finish up my prerequisites and apply for medical school, which has been the idea for over a decade; I just got a little discouraged, a little distracted, and a little scared. Joel refers to it as my white whale. I’m happy with what my path has been and confident that all is as it should be. I have my non-science degree and took a couple years off, so I’ll be a little crustier than most of the other students, but no less qualified. Some of the classes will be downtown… Hopefully I’ll be a better student than a navigator.

Oh yeah, as if I even need to say this – good job, Spurs. 🙂
