It’s nuclear. Not nucular. Homer Simpson says “nucular” – and other than that, even though I live in the south, I had never heard it pronounced that way until about six years ago. (Now let’s see… what happened about six years ago that would have brought this mispronunciation to my attention?) I watch news programs and sometimes listen to NPR (mostly at Joel’s behest, occasionally on my own), and often there are well educated and/or bright people speaking. It’s everywhere. And if there are two people, each saying it differently, the nucular guy keeps saying nucular. You expect this sort of thing from people like Homer, but world leaders and authors? Come on. Maybe some people just don’t hear the difference.

I got so annoyed by this that I decided to do some research. (It doesn’t take much for me to do some research. I have spare time. I get regular calls from my sister that consist of, “Hi. Simple question? Thanks! Bye.” because she knows that I’ll have a detailed answer within the hour.) Nucular is incorrect but very common, since words like particular, circular, spectacular, and molecular are more familiar to the English speaking tongue. (I also found that a story I was told in nearly every Spanish class I took, including those in Spain, is generally considered to be false. Castillian Spanish is not spoken with “lisp” because of a previous lisping king – it’s called an interdental consonant, and no one can be sure how it all happened.)

I share this information at the risk of becoming an insufferable bore.

Also, Joel’s jury duty must end today. “The trial will be two weeks.” This is the third week of it. Two weeks my ass. We have a trip planned. If they don’t finish or get Tuesday off, we will have to change our tickets, come back early, and Joel won’t get to take the rest of his leave. He works too hard and we have had this trip planned too long to go back now. He went in with a strategy today, and I am confident they will make some progress. Mediation is a much better system for most things, in my opinion. Would you rather deal with the egos of two teams of lawyers, the two parties themselves, a judge, a bailiff, and twelve jurors, or just the lawyers and parties? (My friends in law school, I love you, but we all know the goal is to stay out of the courtroom.)

I’m going to be optimistic and say that I’ll be gone for a few days. Happy Fourth! Be safe. We will be celebrating two years of marriage the next day – it has gone by so quickly, yet it seems like we have always been together. I like that.
