Hurry home!

Me: So. You’re going on a real business trip… Do you feel like an adult now?

Joel: I guess. [Crunch , crunch, crunch.]

Me: You are still eating Coco Roos* for breakfast.

Joel responded with a moving rendition of Britney’s “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” chorus (modified, of course).

I think the goodbyes got easier with plenty of practice and repeat homecomings over the years, but I never miss him any less. I’m not the only one; Sophie has already adopted me as her mascot for the week. His plane is just now departing. I have studying to do and tests to take, so hopefully he’ll be back before I know it.

*Coco Roos®, in case you’re too healthy to know, are Malt-O-Meal’s version of Cocoa Pebbles, and they are “number one in their flavor segment”. We originally bought them to eat in place of ice cream, figuring that the sugared, vitamin fortified rice puffs were better for us than sugared cream. Occasionally they replace the fibrous cereal we all know and love. Our parents did a fabulous job providing healthier alternatives for us as children, and for that we (and our teeth and pancreata) thank them. Our children will not know of them until they’re at least eighteen.
