The fair is a veritable smorgasbord.

Well, we made it to the fair. By the fair, I mean the great State Fair of Texas. Growing up, every time my sister and I whined about something not being fair, our parents’ response was, “The fair comes in October.” (Later, when it started coming in September, this response was modified.) I am told that my first experience there was at two weeks old, and I may have missed a handful of years since. Two of those were the last two, though, so returning was a grand old time.

There’s some good people watching at the fair, and the auto shows (domestic and foreign) are always good to visit; of particular interest to us this year were the hybrid cars. I also saw a giant (1100+ pound) pig, an Elvis and hound dogs sculpted from butter, touched a cow’s nose, sat through (and marveled at) the Vita-Mix demo, smelled the fudge and corny dogs and fried stuff and alfalfa (reminding me of my days on the farm), and in general had a very good time with Joel, his parents and my Mom. We missed you, Dad and Amanda! (They had gotten their fair fixes earlier.) When I could still fit in one, Dad made a macramé hanging crib and entered it in the Afts & Crafts show, taking home first prize. I like seeing what people have created and think about what inspired them. We haven’t spent time at the Midway since we were little; for me, the rides are the least draw to the fair.

I’m sorry to say that if you have not gone, you missed it this year. Don’t worry – it will be back, same place, more or less the same time next year. You get discount admission with an empty soda can. Once you’re inside, go see the livestock, listen for Big Tex to welcome you with “Howdy, folks!”, mill around, sample some fair food, catch the parade, and try to understand all you can about the people in the crowds. Oh, and meet at Big Tex’s right boot if you get lost.
