General, Life

One way for the universe to drive home a point

Today I washed my tablecloth and lovingly put it on the dining room table where we take our meals perhaps twenty percent of the time. Just a few days before, it had been clean and set on the table for a scrapbooking party I hostessed. Then an unfortunate accident involving Sophie and a six year old resulted in the entire contents of the table tumbling to the floor. Fortunately, I suppose, the mess was limited to a full salt cellar and a couple of glasses containing only ice and water.

Cut to lunch, today. Joel opens his Coke and begins to pour it, completely oblivious to what, in my mind, unfolds in horrible slow motion: two large drops of caramel colored, high fructose corn syrup launching from the pressurized can, into the air, and landing on my freshly cleaned tablecloth. Unintentionally doing my best impression of Bree Van De Kamp, my napkin is on it in a flash as I simultaneously warn Joel of the mishap. We exchange observations on my craziness and confirm that it’s better to wash a tablecloth now and then than to damage the table underneath. After lunch, he prepares to return to work and I do some dishes. We chat as he heads toward the door; he quiets and looks sorry for me. “I really wish I could help you, but I have to leave…” and then I see it. A tablecloth askew and a full drink spilled. Sophie strikes again.

Another lesson learned. Next time I won’t get so upset about those two drops. Also, the cats should know their boundaries. And I need a no-skid pad for our table.
