Baby, General

8 days!

The crib arrived last night! It was two days earlier than I thought it would be, so that was nice. We’ll probably put it together tonight. Yesterday I took advantage of some major coupons I had and got a few last-minute things for the baby that I know will be useful right away (like wipes, the Diaper Champ, and the breast pump – we already ordered and received about 4 months’ worth of diapers with a deal on amazon.com). I also took the Jeep to get parentified – we earned a free car seat by attending various baby classes at the hospital where Zoe will be born (which, incidentally, is the same hospital where my sister was born almost 25 years ago!), and after a quiz on its proper use, I got it installed and inspected. We need to get our other one installed in Joel’s car and inspected. I’m usually a careful driver, but I found myself being extra careful once that seat was in there. Today I’ll probably install the sunshade I got free with purchase yesterday. I do love me some free stuff.

I’m taking a short nap a day at this point, usually about 30 minutes, and I have noticed that when I wake up (either from the nap or a several-hour stint in the usual nighttime sleep) it is in a vat of my own drool. I can’t keep a pillow comfortably dry, and this morning I had three giant spots on the shoulder of my t-shirt. What’s that about? My face has that tight, dried-drool feel until I shower. I guess I’m really enjoying my sleep. Or my nose is stuffed enough that I’m a mouth breather these days. I’m also having really bizarre but boring dreams; this morning I had one in which I was editing pictures and other images using the Gimp.

I’m looking forward to the arrival (scheduled for tomorrow) of the book I ordered. I have about a week to read it and become familiar with infant care and development. Honestly I feel like a lot of this stuff will be intuitive and learn-as-we-go, and we’ll have plenty of help from veteran parents (our own – they got us this far! ;)). For the moment I feel confident that we will establish a routine that works for us and settle in to being parents just fine.
