Life

New old stuff

12.10.07 | Comment?

Yesterday we were able to spend some time going through our 10′ x 15′ storage space full of stuff.

About storage: Peter Walsh says (in his book, It’s All Too Much!) that storage is, in a word, bad. One should only have the quantity of stuff that will fit in the space one has; any more than that, and the stuff should be pared down. I agree with him wholeheartedly. However, we are in transition; this one bedroom study is temporary. Peter will allow storage for people in transition, but if after a year you still have storage, you are no longer “in transition” – your life has changed. We got the storage in September, so hopefully we will get something done about it in less than a year’s time total (either moving to a more permanent, larger place that will accommodate the stuff we want or getting rid of most of it). We definitely have too much stuff, but I still want the couch, piano, dining room table and chairs, and a few of the things in the boxes that are filling up that space.

Anyway. We brought back many items that will help our current living arrangement as well as a few boxes of clothes. I am feeling so much better about what I was beginning to think was our forever-chaotic life. Today I am getting reacquainted with some formerly favorite pants which, when I packed them away in March, I thought probably never would reenter my wardrobe. They fit again, perhaps better than before. 🙂 It’s really nice to see our stuff again, even if it is just stuff, and I’m starting to feel normal for the first time in a long while.

This last move was nuts. We are learning a lot about how our next move should go to minimize the stress of relocating. We still have a ways to go with the storage (and the stuff in my Mom’s garage…), but I’m feeling hopeful about it now.
