Biochem, friends, and a birthday

Today in New York there is a debonair young lad celebrating his 28th birthday. Mr. Duke Kim, I hope it is the happiest of days for you.

Here it was a biochem sort of day. Miss Zoe and her Dad manned the fort while I went to school for New to Biochemistry Club (NBC) for some extra help with the subject, followed by studying with my friend Jane. As far as we know, we’re the only Moms in the class. We’re making plans to round up all the old marrieds and parents and make a group that meets on a regular basis. Doctor school is hard, both for the students and for their families. Before it sounds like I’m whining too much, it’s a challenge that I’m so happy to have the opportunity to attempt, and I really hope they don’t dismiss me.

Which brings me to my next point. My old familiar friend Fear has freshly reappeared. I find that I do not even know what questions to ask. For every bit that I study, I become aware that I do not know at least 100 more bits. I must continue to remind myself of something my friend Dallas, a second-year student, told me that she heard along the way: med school is like a piñata. When you bust it open and start studying, there’s a lot of candy. The goal is to get as much candy as you possibly can in the amount of time you have. You will not get it all. But you will get some of it, and maybe even a lot of it. Every piece of candy you have is something you didn’t know before, something you’ll get right on the exam or in the way life will test you.

So. I’m diving back in to grab some more candy before bed.
